Under the Influence
For 50 years, the Art Directors Association of Iowa has nurtured the creative spirit of Iowa artists. In recognition of the tradition of ADAI, a gala will be hosted on July 21, 2007. This once-in-a-lifetime event will be held at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.
In any profession, masters of the profession influence everyone participating in the profession. As the members of ADAI and practitioners of graphic design, we have had the opportunity, over the last 50 years, to be influenced and inspired by successful artists within our organization and by professionals from all over the country.
Please plan to attend the gala, whether you are a current member, past member, past speaker, friend of ADAI, everyone is invited!

I submitted the concept of the "under the influence" theme because I wanted to take the 50 year anniversary of ADAI to reflect on how ADAI has influenced my choices and inspiration as a graphic designer.
As artists, we have the tendency to be inspired and influenced by the individuals that seem to have a mastery of the visual craft. These are the people we look up to. It may be someone we know or have known personally in a mentoring role, while others may have been from completely different environments or decades. At some point, we have all been under the influence of a master and it has directed our path. Many artists use this connection as a springboard to develop their own style and technique. For 50 years the ADAI has produced and nurtured the creative spirit of some of Iowa's finest advertising artists. Mentors, masters and students have all been a part of the influence we have on each other. As the 50-year benchmark approaches, let's be aware of the importance these influences have had on our lives as artists.
